Club News Round-up: Mornington LAC

For the nearly 200 members of the Mornington club, 2020 started with the usual range of indoor and outdoor events and activities.

Friday evening BBQs and outdoor lunches at local wineries. Happy hours, lunches, dinners, book club, golf, table tennis, board games, coffee chats, jazz night, cinema, etc got into full swing in the New Year. We held a special, fully booked dinner and trivia evening in February. Several members enjoyed a weekend away mid-March to Erica, including a train journey to the old gold mining town of Walhalla.

Restrictions also prompted invention of new ways to keep in touch and keep involved. Thanks to our Webmaster Denise Riley, the club now uses ZOOM for online contact sessions each week. We have general chat, armchair travel, games, book club, and even a themed virtual happy hour on Friday evenings with photo sharing, funny hats, and lots of laughs. Seeing familiar faces, sharing stories and learning more about our fellow members is proving a real success. With the May relaxation of restrictions, three outdoor activities (golf, walking and cycling) have resumed.

In spite of restrictions, our publicity officer has some creative new ideas for reaching newly retired people moving to the Peninsula and we are updating promotional material. Sadly, Peter Stevens has retired as Vice President and we wish him well with his health challenges.
